I was in heaven! A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit a food co-op in a larger city. I would much rather shop at a food co-op than a typical supermarket. Food co-ops offer a wider variety of healthy food items that are organic, sustainable, fair trade, humanely raised, etc. So when I had the opportunity to visit a large one, I was excited. I don't have great access to this type of food in the small town where I live. So I basically bought up everything I could.
I Had a "What the $@!#" Moment
During my frenzy, I don't know what came over me. I bought some food that was, well let's say, not very food-like. I purchased some fish. Healthy, right? At least I think that's what was in my head when I bought it. But as you can see in the picture below, after I took a closer look at the label, I had a "what the $@!#" moment. If you look closely, you will see listed as an ingredient "Red and Green Pepper Flavored Bits." You will then see a long list of ingredients in parentheses. This means that the ingredients in the parentheses are what is blended together to make the Red and Green Pepper Flavored Bits. In this case, there are 12 ingredients. Really? It's better to replace two natural ingredients with this hazardous cocktail??? Only from the manufacturer's point of view if you're trying to save money by producing food with cheap chemicals.
Would You Like ADHD
Here is why these ingredients matter:
*Partially hydrogenated oils have been linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease
*Artificial flavors are linked to thyroid disorders, allergies and behavioral issues
*Caramel coloring has caused cancer in mice
*Red, yellow and blue food coloring can trigger hypersensitivity and hyperactivity in children and causes tumors in mice
*Red and green peppers taste good. These do not.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is DON'T do what I did. I am typically a hard-core food label reader. I got sloppy. Know your food. Don't just read the label for the number of calories, fat and fiber. Know what you are about to feed your body and feed to your family. What you put into your body REALLY DOES MATTER. Be sure to make yourself aware of what's in your food so that you can define for yourself if it matters to you.
