I’ve worked with many people to help them lose weight. Men, women, moms, dads, singles, marrieds, young and not so young. And they would lose some of the pounds. This was the best part of the job, by the way. Seeing those moments of happiness on their faces. Seeing that sense of pride and satisfaction in finally achieving their goals.
But something kept happening. Usually six to twelve months later, they would fall out of their new health habits. You can see in their faces that they felt like they’ve failed. And it wasn’t long before the weight was back on and we were looking for another way to take it off.
After watching this happen with client after client, I had to step back and ask “What is really going on here?” After all, the basic tools for losing weight are pretty straight forward. And clients use them easily…for a while. Until….
This “Until” was LIFE. The one thing all of my clients had in common was when life changed for them somehow, their weight loss plan did too. They threw it out the window.
This has been chronic with women…moms in particular. Moms not only have to flex to the changes in their own lives, but also have to flex when changes happen to their family. And they lack the tools to be able to rebound after those changes.
So when I sat back and observed what was going on, it became apparent that there were three common mistakes moms were making when they were trying to lose weight.
1. Most moms don’t know how to reach their weight loss goals because they don’t even know what they really want for their life as a whole. They lack a “big picture” view of their future. They’ve lost touch with their dream life. They are not able to make a connection between their desire for weight loss and how that would benefit their life overall.
2. Because moms lack connection with their dream life, they lack connection with how they can align their current life with that dream. Basically, they live their lives in survival mode. They make sure things keep rolling day to day without really knowing if it is heading in the right direction.
3. When it comes to making the proper choices for weight loss in the moment, moms fail. They lack the skills to make the best choices for their family AND themselves. This is mainly as a consequence of points 1 and 2. It is hard to change a deep rooted habit if you don’t have clear vision. You can’t change a habit if you don’t change the thoughts behind that habit. And you can’t form a new habit unless you make the right choice in the moment.
